[guitar]John present gear

Postby The Beast » Tue Feb 09, 2010 7:26 pm

Hello,

I've been a huge Europe and John fan for 25 years, new here, and as a guitarist I'm looking for an information I can't find anywhere.
I really like John sound on Start From The Dark album, on the Live DVD John says he uses EMG pickup, but which models are they and why doesn't he use them anymore now? It seems he now uses Seymour Duncans pickups, don't know which models, maybe because he wanted a more warm and "rock" sound, but why doesn't he keep a guitar with EMG pickups for more aggressive songs? Did he experience problems with his pickups?

Norum changes stuff often. Guitars, pickups, cabinets. The EMG picups he used was EMG 81 and 85 (Zakk Wylde Set)
And on the Secret Society tour he used Gibson Classic 57 pickups on his 1981 Gibson Les Paul Custom (But he has sold that guitar now)

And I guesse he uses his Flying V for the agressive and "gainy" sound these days

But on the "Start From The Dark" album he mosty used Gibson Les Pauls with P-90 pickups.
He used a Gold Top (with p-90) on 80 % of the solos on that album, For rythm guitar he mainly used a Gibson Les Paul Customshop '54 (also with p-90 pickups) and on "Song Nr. 12" he used a Gibson SG '67 (again, with p-90)

The microphones he used to mic up the cabinet was Shure 57 and Beyer M88

Gibson Les Paul's, Custom, V's etc

Pickups; Seymour Duncan 59's in neck, JB's in bridge

Amps; Marshall JCM800 2205 with KT88 valves

Cabinets; Marshall 4x12 with Vintage 30 speakers

On the "Last Look At Eden" record his guitars were recorded with a Neumann U47 FET straight into a NEVE VXS mixing board.

thanxs for all the explanations
in fact I am really a huge John's sound fan, particularly on Start From The dark, and I manage to get a new Les Paul style guitar, and I wonder if it's worth mounting Emg active pick-ups on it, since I really like the sound John had on tour, but if he doesn't use them anymore...

I seem to remember that John installed the EMG's to avoid noise on his signal, with the long cables being used in the Europe Live setup (he's a perfectionist!!)

But get a set of Seymour Duncan 59 and JB, use a heavy set of gauge strings (0.11s if you can manage, or at leat 0.10) and plug your Les Paul guitar into a Marshall amp turned up really well, and there's your John Norum sound

So, does he never use Fender Strats anymore? Although I think he has a truly great sound these days, I also really love his strat-sound on TFC - the live sound he had on that tour is my favourite!

He used a Strat on "Let the Children Play" on the left channel and a Les Paul on the right (if I remember right).
And he used a Strat on the left channel on "Last Look At Eden" and a Les Paul on the right channel there aswell.
He also uses a Strat on "Catch That Plane" on both channels and on "Only Young Twice"

It's possible he uses one on other tracks aswell, but these are the once I know about

Here's a recent interview I did with John about his equipment, including a drawing of his set-up.

It was published in Fuzz Magazine (Sweden)
